Aarne Pelkonen, Baritone

The winner of 1st prize in the International Sibelius Singing Competition 2015.

Finnish baritone Aarne Pelkonen studied at the Sibelius Academy with Marjut Hannula, at the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin with Prof. Thomas Quasthoff and Prof. Wolfram Rieger, in masterclasses with Thomas Hampson and Barbara Bonney, and privately with Mika Kares, Prof. Elisabeth Werres, Gerold Huber and Prof. Charles Spencer amongst others.

Aarne Pelkonen became a member of Oldenburg State Theatre in September 2015, where he performs Pallante in Händel’s Agrippina, Figaro in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, Donner in Wagner’s Rheingold and Sam in Bernstain’s Trouble in Tahiti, amongst others.

Recent engagements include his appearance as Il Conte Robinson in Il matrimonio 
segreto at Theater Trier, Freddy in My fair lady and Barone Douphol in La Traviata at Neue Eutiner Festspiele, as well as Petter Kummel in Jää at the Finnish National Opera.

His many prizes include 1. prize in the International Sibelius Singing Competition 2015 and 1. prize for male voice in the Lappeenranta National Singing Competition in 2013. Together with pianist Juho Alakärppä he was a prize winner in Das Lied – International Song Competition in Berlin in 2011 and at the International Student Lied-Duo Competition in Enschede in the Netherlands.

Mr. Pelkonen is active as a lied and oratorio singer and has performed at the Heidelberger Frühling Festival and Helsinki Festival, in the Wiener Musikverein and Stockholm Concert Hall and with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra, Tapiola Sinfonietta, Finnish Baroque orchestra and Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra, to name but a few. Mr. Pelkonen’s recordings include Brahms’ and Sibelius’ songs for the Finnish Broadcast.
