Born in Australia, Angus Wood moved to London at an early age. He was awarded a singing scholarship to the Royal College of Music, after which he returned to Australia, completing a Bachelor of Music with Honours at the University of Melbourne. In 1993 Angus was invited to the 'National Vocal Symposium', under the tutelage of Ms. Malena Malas, Dame Joan Sutherland and Luigi Alva. He has been a member of both the Victorian State Opera and the Australian Opera Young Artist Programs. Angus was the recipient of the inaugural Silvia Fisher Award and the 2001 Sir Robert Askin Operatic Travelling Scholarship.
Following his debut for Opera Australia in 1993 he sang many of the leading lyric baritone roles for the company, ranging from Papageno in The Magic Flute to Pelleas in Pelleas et Melisande. The experience of singing Pelleas, a role often sung by a tenor, coupled with the advice and encouragement of Luciano Pavarotti and then Music Director of Opera Australia Simone Young, in 2000 Angus decided to re-study as a tenor at the University of Michigan, where he also completed his Masters of Music. He re-debuted 9 months later as Jupiter in Pinchgut Opera’s inaugral production of Semele. Since then his roles with Opera Australia have included Cassio in Harry Kupfer’s production of Otello, Aeneas in Dido and Aeneas, the Narrator in Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda, Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus and the Young Collector in A Streetcar named Desire.
Angus is a regular guest with many of the state companies and orchestras of Australia. For Canterbury Opera in New Zealand he has performed Alfredo in La Traviata, Cavaradossi in Tosca and Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor. For West Australian Opera his roles include Turridu in Cavalleria Rusticana and Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly. For State Opera South Australia he sang Anthony Hope in Sweeney Todd and The Steuermann in The Flying Dutchman.
After winning the German Australian Opera Award in 2006, Angus became a resident singer at the Hessisches Staatstheater in Wiesbaden where his roles included Alfredo: La Traviata; Arbace: Idomeneo; Sou Chong: The Land of Smiles; Dr Siedler: Im Weissen Rössl; August Kuhbrot: Der Vetter aus Dingsda; Tamino, Erste Priester and Geharnischter Mann: Die Zauberflöte; Alfredo: Die Fledermaus; Maler: Lulu and Melot: Tristan und Isolde.
During his ensuing engagement at Anhaltisches Theater Dessau Angus sang Riccardo: Un Ballo in Maschera, Golitzin: Chowantschina, title role: The Protagonist, title role: Candide, Pong: Turandot, Rodney Hatch: One Touch of Venus, Lorenzo: La Muette de Portici, and Piquillo: La Périchole.
His portrayal of Boni in The Gypsy Princess for Opera Australia and the Narrator in Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda were both recognised with nominations as Best Male Singer in a Principal Role, Green Room Awards and Best Male Performer in an Opera at the Helpmann Awards.
Equally comfortable on the concert stage, Angus’ concert engagements have included Messiah for Sydney Philharmonia, West Australian Symphony Orchestra and Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony for Sydney Philharmonia and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, New Year’s concerts with the Australian Pops and Australian Philharmonic Orchestras, Haydn’s Creation in Wiesbaden and a series of Händel concerts for the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra. Angus also regularly performs in recital, including performances at Government House (Sydney Festival), the Art Gallery of NSW, Melbourne Federation Festival, Opera Under the Stars in Broome and Opera in the Vineyards.
Recent performances have included Verdi Requiem for West Australian Symphony, Alfredo in Die Fledermaus for Europe’s largest operetta festival in Mörbisch, Austria. Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly for West Australian Opera and Chekalinsky in Queen of Spades for Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
In 2011 Angus became a member of the Theatre der Stadt in Heidelberg where his roles include Ramades in Aida, Don José in Carmen, Cavaradossi in Tosca, and Gustavo in Ballo in Maschera. Upcoming performances include Peter in Morgen und Abend for Theater und Orchester Heidelberg and Boris in Kat'a Kabanova for New Zealand Opera in Auckland.
